The retrospective A Nature in Motion, dedicated to Leila Beydoun Chalabi, took place in February at the Stone Garden Building, in collaboration with Dongola Limited Editions and Galerie Tanit.

Curated by Randa Sadaka, the exhibition celebrated Chalabi’s decades-long journey of capturing nature’s vibrant energy through color, texture, and light.

Born in Beirut in 1934, Chalabi’s artistic career spanned continents, from Abu Dhabi to Paris and back to her homeland, where she resides permanently since 2015. Educated at the Beirut College for Women in the 1950s, she continuously refined her artistic approach, blending tradition with innovation. Her technique is distinct; thick layers of oil paint, often mixed with crushed paper tubes, create textured reliefs that amplify her expressive compositions.

A Universe of Luminous Motion

Leila Beydoun Chalabi’s work is deeply rooted in an appreciation for nature’s movement and vitality. Her early paintings from the 1990s leaned toward classical figuration before transitioning into vibrant floral compositions. By the early 2000s, her fascination with butterflies emerged, leading to a delicate yet dynamic visual language. Since 2010, her artistic direction embraced abstraction, offering a deeply personal and emotional interpretation of landscapes.

Her ability to evoke motion and radiance is best exemplified in two key works from A Nature in Motion.

In Tourbillon Solaire (2024), Chalabi captures the dynamic energy of nature through swirling yellows and blues that seem to burst from the canvas. The thick, impasto layers of paint add a tactile quality, making the composition feel almost alive. The interplay of light and movement in this piece reflects her signature style, where nature is not static but in constant transformation, vibrating with life.

In another striking work, Incandescente Céleste (2022), Leila Beydoun Chalabi immerses the viewer in a celestial explosion of luminous blues, fiery oranges, and radiant yellows. The painting pulses with an ethereal energy, where color and movement merge to evoke the sensation of a cosmic dance. Thick layers of oil paint create a textured relief, enhancing the vibrancy of the composition and giving it a dynamic, almost three-dimensional presence. The swirling light and warmth in the piece suggest both the vastness of the sky and the intimate glow of an inner fire, making it a powerful testament to Chalabi’s mastery of color and emotion.

The Power of Color and Light

Chalabi’s paintings are more than just visual depictions of nature: they are immersive environments where color dictates emotion, and light becomes a subject in itself. She favors linen canvases for their durability and organic quality, allowing the pigment to interact naturally with the surface. Her bold use of texture and contrast gives her compositions a distinctive energy, where light filters through layers of oil paint to create a sense of transparency and depth.

Her retrospective curated by Randa Sadaka, accompanied by the publication of The Trilogy of Leila Beydoun Chalabi: The Radiance of Color, the Power of Light, the Inspiration of Nature by Dongola Limited Editions, cements her legacy as an artist who has remained true to her vision. Through her unique techniques and unbreakable bond with nature, Chalabi invites us into a world where landscapes are not fixed but are ever-evolving, luminous, and full of life.

For those who missed the exhibition, these works stand as testaments to Chalabi’s artistic philosophy, one where nature is not just observed but felt, where color is not just applied but lived, and where movement is eternal.
